Not much appears to be known about our first known Masse. His name was Pierre.
Here is what I have on him and his wife, Marie Pinet de LaChesnaye: Masse,
Pierre (...) d'origine inconnue; d entre 18-04-1678 et rec. 81, Sillery; 50 ans
au rec. 66, 60 ans rec. 67, a cote St-Ignace a Sillery; confirme 10-08-1659 Quebec,
40 ans; m annule ct 11-09-1673 Becquet: Charlotte de LaRue, ensuite femme de Jean-Baptiste
Lavanois. Pinet, de LaChasnaye, Marie (...) d'origine inconnue; d avant 11-09-1673;
40 ans au rec. 66, 50 ans au rec. 67; confirmee 10-08-1659 Quebec, 35 ans.
So what does all this mean? Well, both are actually ASSUMED to have been born
in France. The source cited above never really says where. The "au rec." is a
census and the year. Pierre died between 1678 and the 1681 census. Seems the ages
don't match up between each census. It also seems as though Pierre had a marriage
annulled? Not quite sure. Guess I need to really brush up on my French!
